Centerville Bike Path
Bike path story
In 2012, Centerville embarked on an ambitious project to create a paved bike trail connecting its two largest City Parks. With lots of community support and hard work and a grant from the South Dakota DOT phase 1 was completed in 2015. Additional grant funding was needed to continue phase 2 over the Vermillion River and out to Gunderson Park. Phase 2 was completed in 2016.
The path was named Weverstad Trail to honor Walt Weverstad and family. Walt was the long time newspaper editor in Centerville. Thanks to a generous donation from the Weverstad family we were able to collect the matching funds for the grant.
The trail stretches from Peder Larsen park near the City pool, north of town and then northwest out historical Gunderson Beach nature area. The path is used almost daily by a variety of young and old and has been a great addition to the community.
